Propylene oxide, molecular formula: C3H6O, relative molecular mass: 58, density: 0.830 g/cm3 (20℃), melting point: 112℃, boiling point: 34℃, soluble in water, propylene oxide, also named as PrO and SMPO, is a very important organic compounds, the raw material, is the third largest polypropylene and acrylonitrile acrylamide derivatives. Propylene oxide is a colorless etherified liquid with low boiling point and flammability. It has chirality, industrial products are usually racemic mixtures of two enantiomers. It is partly miscible with water and partly miscible with ethanol and ether. Binary azeotropic mixture is formed with pentane, pentene, cyclopentane, cyclopentene and dichloromethane. It is toxic, irritating to mucosa and skin, can damage the cornea and conjunctiva, causing pain in the respiratory system, skin burns and swelling, and even tissue necrosis.


Propylene oxide (PO) is mainly used in the production of polyether, propylene glycol, etc. It is also the fourth generation detergent non-ionic surfactant, oilfield demulsifier, pesticide emulsifier and other main raw materials. The derivatives of propylene oxide are widely used in automobile, construction, food, tobacco, medicine, cosmetics and other industries. It has produced nearly 100 kinds of downstream products and is an important raw material of fine chemical products.
